Mussels Environmental Problems in the Black River Missouri
Freshwater mussels are endangered due to the environmental problems in the Black River Missouri. This paper argues that the first mussel environmental problems may be caused by pesticides and herbicides. Second, mussel environmental problems can be caused by construction and commercial industry and finally there are some possible environmental and educative solutions. These are three important topics to try to help the mussel continue develop their life.
This special animal has my attention due to the fact that in Europe and North America they supply some necessity for other animals in water and food, and some fish put their eggs inside the mussel, and the mussels cried because there is a good place for eggs to remain safe; on the other hand the mussel can produce pearls, and this is one important commercial value, these are for me interesting and exciting reasons for developing programs to preserve their life.
Environmental problems around the Black River of Missouri are serious problems due to the fact that some species of mussels are endangered. In the beginning I want to explain what freshwater mussels are. Second, we should know where this species develops its life. Third, I plan to write this paper with emphasis on their environmental problem due to the fact that actually there is big threat to them and finally their possible solution. This topic has my attention because I live in this area and I think it is a good topic to try in this class and to learn more about this region and to learn more about the uncommon animals called mussels.
I talk about what fresh water mussels are. “Mussels are not the most charismatic animal. They don’t have a head. They live where people don’t encounter them. Most people like bald eagles, otters or whooping cranes, but mussels are just as important in the overall scheme of thing, Huston said (Christian, 2004, p.1).
Some relatives of mussels are mollusks, clams, oysters and other mussels that live in freshwater like the river. Mussels have a very flexible live-long chain because they can live for 20 to 30 years or even more than 100 years. Mussels are an uncommon animal; they are relatively immobile; we can find 42 species; mussels have two types, one is Zebra mussel and Pink Musk. The first one is bad and plentiful, but the second is an important part of the traditional ecosystem.
Mussels live in fresh water throughout the world; we can find the big diversity of fresh water mussels in North America, because they like to live in habitats that contain abundant gravel and mud. Mussels supply some necessity for other animals, like food, and some fish put their eggs inside the mussel and the mussel, cries because there is a good place for eggs to remain safe; these are good points because they help some creatures work together to mutual advantage. I believe that the mussel is an important thing in the environmental, due to the fact that the experts explained, they have a lot work to do; “ for example, they are ‘a canary in the coal mine’” (Christian, 2004, p.1).
This means the habitat river has a good healthy life, and when the mussels in the area disappear, the biologists think the water and environment may be affected.
In this paper I talk about one specific type of the mussels call “Pink Mucket” or “Square Mucket”. Pink Mucket is a little large mussel with a tick, inflated, smooth and yellow-brown shell. Pink Mucket mussel, develop their lives in flowing waters and abundant gravel; for this reason we can find Pink Mucket in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Arkansas, Alabama, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Kentucky.
At this moment the Pink Mucket has lost its habitat due to environmental problems. Environmental problems affect all the life in the ecosystem; we need to think and to know about that the future consequences and effects.
In the beginning, I talk about their environmental problems caused by pollution from herbicides and pesticides; this problem is caused by the fact that farmers in this region use chemicals in their farms to control diseases in their products but they are unaware of the futures effects of the pesticides they use. Pesticides are chemicals that kill animals and vegetation but the farmers think if they use them they will make more money for their production.
The problem is that these products contain some pollutants that change the environment, they kill fish and contaminate the water and change the where natural ecosystem.
Finally unfortunately the use pesticides on Illinois farms I think might be increased because farmers don’t know about the consequences and effects of the pesticides they use. There are big reasons for founding some solutions and preventing future effects.
Therefore, I think one the solution is to implement laws by controlling the pesticides and herbicides with few strong regulations and punishments such as the federal law that prohibits the importation, transportation, and their commercialization in general.
Ecologists should promptly find a solution to prevent more future consequences through educational activities for farmers and all the residents around the Black River in Missouri. For example, there should be a pamphlet or brochure which explains the effects and consequences of using these products and the benefit of preserving the mussels in the Black River of Missouri. These educational activities can do the same for children and all the students in their school. Another possible solution is implantation the educational activities for all the population around the river with focus on the young people because they are the future farm and local residents; furthermore, this action can development now with good effect in the future. One other possible action is to create groups with specific finality; for example, realization of the recreational activities whose objective is to collect financial resources and have ducational purpose. If everybody works together we can to find a solution promptly and we can to prevent their extinction.
Second, the mussel environmental problem can be from construction and commercial industry; these are two form for make money due to that fact that “Mussels can produce pearls, and their shells can be used to make buttons for clothing or to serve as seedstck for the culture pearl industry” (Hambrook & Eberle, 2000 p.1). Furthermore, Pink Muckets have a commercial value for use in the polished chip industry, all these commercial industries contribute to their habitat destruction.
Elsewhere, their habitat loss is from dam construction, canalization and dredging; these reason contribute al these species has declined and deteriorated their existent.” The Pink Mucket has declined in range and numbers due to dam and reservoir construction that has changed natural river flow, water temperature and oxygen and sediment contents” ( Matthews ). The economic development is the highest consequence that environmental problems in general, a fortunately this topic is discuses by environmentalists and biologist and all the people involved in ours environmental development and the solution it’s a global solution. Everybody work together for find the best solution now and in the future for environmental problems and economic development. This is a good point due to that the fact that “Protecting and restoring mussel population is difficult if knowledge of their environmental requirements is lacking” ( Hambrook,& Eberle 2000 p.1).
In conclusion, to preserve the animal and vegetation life in the river is a wonderful thing, and an interesting environmental development, and to find a solution to their problems promptly can help to control their extinction. Mussels can be uncommon and different animal but their work in the world is really important for preserve a good environmental ecosystem and everybody needs to know about their importance and help to stop their extinction.
We must preserve the animals and vegetation life in order to save the human population.
